I heard the /S/ of "ci" as a Russian 'sh', which has the tongue further back
on the hard palate. Of course, since the speaker is a native Russian...

Actually, as I also speak Chinese, {ci} I pronounce is Chinese 是 (shi4).
Moreover, some cmavo like {mo}, {ma}, pro-sumti {do}, {mi} etc I pronounce with Chinese rising (2nd) or descending (4th) tones.
cmavo {li} is said in 3rd tone. While this in no case violates any lojban pronunciation rules, and can hardly be noticed by non-Chinese-speaking people, it greatly helps (in my opinion) to distinguish cmavo from other words in lojbanic text.
